By Michael Lange OD, CNS

After more than three decades in practice, I’ve learned that Dry Eye Disease (DED) and Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD) are not just local ocular surface disorders—they’re systemic, nutritionally responsive conditions.

At the Lange Eye Institute, we’ve developed an integrative model that merges advanced technology—Lumenis OptiLight IPL and OptiLift DMS + RF—with targeted, evidence-based nutrition from Fortifeye® Vitamins.

This “inside-out” approach reduces inflammation, improves mitochondrial efficiency, restores meibomian gland output, and rebuilds the tear film naturally and sustainably.

1. The Lange Philosophy: Treat the Whole Patient, Not Just the Eye

The ocular surface mirrors systemic inflammation. Poor diet, oxidative stress, and metabolic imbalance all degrade tear quality and glandular function.

That’s why every plan begins with nutrition and lifestyle.

The Lange Survival Diet

  • Eliminate seed oils, refined carbohydrates, and processed foods.
  • Focus on wild-caught fish, grass-fed meats, and organic produce.
  • Maintain hydration with mineral-balanced water.
  • Eliminate anti nutrients like: oxalates, lectins, phytic acid, fodmaps, and gluten

This baseline lowers systemic inflammation and primes the body for ocular recovery.

2. Omega-3 and GLA Synergy: The Cornerstone of Fortifeye® Dry Eye Nutrition

Our studies at the Lange Eye Institute demonstrate that combining Fortifeye® Super Omega-3 or Super Omega-3 Max with Fortifeye® Black Currant Oil (GLA) is foundational for restoring meibomian gland and tear-film function.

The Ideal Ratio

  • 140 mg of GLA to ≥ 1,400 mg of rTG omega-3 (EPA + DHA) is the minimum effective ratio.
  • Higher ratios (1,600–2,400 mg omega-3 to 140 mg GLA) produce greater anti-inflammatory effects in the eye and glands getting faster and better results.

Omega Index Optimization

At the Lange Eye Institute:

  • Omega index study at Lange Eye Institute close to 100 % of patients ≤ 220 lbs reached an omega index of 8–9 % on Fortifeye® Super Omega-3 (1,600 mg EPA + DHA/day).
  • Patients > 220 lbs required Fortifeye® Super Omega-3 Max (2,400 mg/day) for the same range.

Achieving an omega index of 8–9 % correlates with marked improvement in tear stability, gland expressibility, and ocular comfort. Using a high quality rTG omega 3 fish oil at these levels is crucial when dealing with meibomian gland dysfunction

3. Carotenoid Science: Lutein, Zeaxanthin, and Astaxanthin for Ocular Surface and Brain Health

Lutein and Zeaxanthin Isomers

Beyond their well-known macular roles, these carotenoids enhance tear-film stability and meibomian gland integrity.

Evidence shows:

  • Six months of lutein/zeaxanthin supplementation improved Schirmer’s and TBUT scores in high-screen users.
  • Animal and clinical work demonstrated reduced ocular surface inflammation and better lipid-layer function.
  • Multi-nutrient complexes combining lutein, zeaxanthin, curcumin, and vitamin D3 improved tear stability and reduced corneal staining.

Fortifeye® Formulas Featuring These Nutrients

  • Fortifeye® Focus — 10 mg lutein, 2 mg zeaxanthin, 6 mg astaxanthin.
  • Fortifeye® Focus & Brain — identical formula plus Cognizin® Citicoline for neuro-visual support.
  • Fortifeye® Next Gen Macular Defense and Zinc-Free Macular Defense — full spectrum lutein, zeaxanthin, meso-zeaxanthin, saffron, ALCAR, astaxanthin, bilberry, pine bark extract, grape seed extract, resveratrol, CoQ10, alpha-lipoic acid, taurine, zinc and vitamins B, E, C and D3 . No beta carotene.
  • Fortifeye Next Gen Curcumin- 500mg of Curcugen (food grade oleo resin curcumin)

These carotenoids and nutrients filter high-energy blue light, stabilize cell membranes, lower inflammation and support tear-film lipid integrity.

Astaxanthin — The Master Antioxidant

Astaxanthin is a potent fat-soluble antioxidant that protects the lipid layer of the tear film and reduces inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-α and IL-1β.

Clinical data:

  • 6 mg/day for 8 weeks improved dryness, redness, and irritation.
  • 12 mg/day for 30 days improved meibum quality and gland function.

Fortifeye® Focus and Fortifeye® Focus & Brain supply clinically validated astaxanthin for ocular surface and retinal protection.

4. Vitamin D, Performance, and Tissue/Barrier Support — The Complete Nutritional Core

For a broad foundation, Fortifeye® Complete and Fortifeye® Macular Defense deliver:

  • Lutein, zeaxanthin, meso-zeaxanthin
  • CoQ10, alpha-lipoic acid, resveratrol, taurine
  • Methylated B-complex, zinc, selenium, vitamins C ,E and D3
  • Saffron, astaxanthin, grape sed extract, pine bark extract, bilberry

These serve as the core nutritional base for ocular and systemic health.

Fortifeye® Rejuvenate

A skin and ocular-adnexa tissue-support formula that enhances hydration, elasticity, and barrier function—ideal for patients undergoing OptiLift DMS + RF or skin/eyelid rejuvenation.

Key ingredients:

  • Morikol® marine collagen tripeptides
  • Hyaluronic acid
  • Rice ceramides
  • Dermaval® phytonutrient blend
  • PureWay-C® liposomal vitamin C
  • Biotin
  • Multivitamin support matrix

Rejuvenate pairs synergistically with omega-3 therapy for skin and lid tissue resilience.

Fortifeye® Fit Pro

A performance and recovery formula that supports muscle, metabolism, and ocular rehabilitation through cellular energy optimization.

Key ingredients:

  • Creapure® creatine monohydrate
  • myHMB® (β-hydroxy-β-methylbutyrate)
  • Betaine anhydrous
  • Vitamin D3
  • L-citrulline
  • Peak ATP®
  • Grass-fed collagen protein
  • Grass-fed whey protein

Fit Pro is an ideal partner to Super Omega-3 and Black Currant Oil to achieve the 8–9 % omega-index and promote whole-body recovery.

5. Gut–Eye Axis: Microbiome and Systemic Inflammation

Balanced gut flora reduces systemic cytokines that drive ocular surface inflammation.

Fortifeye® Probiotics and Fortifeye® Organic Blue-Green Superfood help restore microbial balance, enhance immune resilience, and lower oxidative stress to support tear film homeostasis. Consumption of fermented food three times per week and try to follow the Lange Survival Diet will speed up positive results.

6. Comprehensive Blepharitis and Demodex Management

At the Lange Eye Institute, blepharitis is addressed from both the inside and outside.

1. Tea Tree Oil Lid Hygiene: Removes biofilm and Demodex mites.

2. Lumenis OptiLight IPL: Treats vascular inflammation and eradicates Demodex while improving meibomian gland output.

3. Xdemvy™ (lotilaner 0.25 %) FDA-approved topical therapy for Demodex blepharitis.

Nutritional Synergy

Patients on Fortifeye® Super Omega-3, Black Currant Oil (GLA), Focus, and Rejuvenate demonstrate faster lid healing, better meibum quality, and more stable tear films—confirming that systemic nutrition amplifies local therapy.

7. Advanced Technology Integration: OptiLight IPL and OptiLift DMS + RF

Our Dry Eye Center of Excellence pairs OptiLight IPL for vascular/inflammatory control with OptiLift DMS + RF (Deep Muscle Stimulation + Radiofrequency) for eyelid rejuvenation and collagen remodeling.

When combined with Fortifeye® nutrition, patients experience superior blink dynamics, meibomian gland flow, and tear film stability with visible periocular rejuvenation.

8. Implementation Protocol

  1. Assess: Omega index, diet, vitamin D status, tear film, meibography.
  2. Prescribe:
    • Fortifeye® Super Omega-3 / Super Omega-3 Max
    • Fortifeye® Black Currant Oil (GLA 140 mg)
    • Fortifeye® Focus or Focus & Brain
    • Fortifeye® Complete, Rejuvenate, or Fit Pro
    • Fortifeye® Probiotics and Superfood
  3. Combine: OptiLight IPL, OptiLift DMS + RF, Xdemvy™, and tea tree oil lid hygiene.
  4. Monitor: Omega index (8–9 %), TBUT, osmolarity, OSDI scores, and gland expression.

9. Dr. Lange’s Closing Philosophy

“Dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction are inflammatory diseases of modern living.

When we combine advanced technology with precise, science-based nutrition, we treat the root cause — not just the symptom.

Fortifeye® Vitamins deliver the Right Ingredients, Right Science, and Right Results for our patients.”

— Dr. Michael P. Lange, O.D., CNS

Dr Michael Lange of Fortifeye Vitamins has developed one of the first plant-based proteins with an amino acid profile similar to whey protein. Fortifeye Vegan Super Protein is one of the first in the industry to have a smooth creamy delicious taste with no grainy or chalky consistency like most on the market. Fortifeye Vegan Super Protein uses only proteins from North America. The Sprouted non gmo pea protein isolate comes from Canada and the Ancient grain sprouted barley is upcycled and comes from the USA. Fortifeye adds Velositol to the formula to enhance the power of the protein and the amino acids. This is a patented, clinically backed complex of amylopectin and chromium that has won many awards. This new Vegan Protein was developed to enhance muscle synthesis, build new muscle and help to preserve muscles you already have.

Fortifeye Vegan Super Protein comes in 3 delicious flavors: vanilla, chocolate and salted caramel mocha. These proteins have no artificial flavors or sweeteners and use a patented form of monk fruit and stevia for the delicious flavors with no added sugar. Almost all vegan proteins have a country of origin of China and at this time Dr Lange wanted to use only North American derived proteins. Fortifeye Vitamins also uses only sprouted proteins to reduce the lectins and phytic acid and enhance absorption. This all-new plant-based protein has 21 grams of protein per serving. Finally, Vegans have a great vegan protein powder that is similar to whey in muscle building power. learn more and order at https://fortifeye.com/product/fortifeye-vegan-super-protein/

Gamer Vitamins may give a competitive edge, reduce eye strain, support neurocognition and protect the macula. Fortifeye Gamer Xtreme is born.

Posted by Dr Michael Lange on December 11, 2022
Posted in: Uncategorized. 1 Comment

Dr Michael Lange has been an optometric physicians and certified nutrition specialist at the Lange Eye Institute in the Villages Florida since the early 90s. He has seen what prolonged use of computers, tablets and smart phones can do to the visual system. A syndrome called computer vision syndrome is very vogue in eye doctors’ offices these days since so many people are in front of digital screens for prolonged periods of time. The symptoms for this form of digital eye strain are eyes that feel sandy, gritty, burn, tear, itch, fluctuation in vision, eye fatigue, blurred vision, headaches, neck, shoulder and back pain, brain fog, memory loss and much more. Dr Lange and the Fortifeye Vitamin team have studied nutritional approaches to help with CVS (computer vision syndrome). They have done extensive studies with different formulations of nutrients to come up with the current line of supplements they recommend. Fortifeye Focus was the first supplement developed to help patients with CVS and this is one of the most popular supplements being used and recommended by patients and doctors all over the globe. Fortifeye Focus uses the power of four carotenoids in specific ratios to help reduce accommodative stress and support the focusing abilities of the eye while increasing macular pigment optical density in the macula (MPOD). Most eye care providers that are in tune with nutrition believe increasing MPOD decreases blue light damage to the retina, and this decreases macular degeneration related to blue light exposure. Fortifeye Focus uses lutein, zeaxanthin isomers (combination of meso zeaxanthin and RR zeaxanthin) and Astareal astaxanthin. This formulation has been used by 1000s of people and being recommended by doctors all over the world with great success. The ingredients are backed by years and years of clinical studies proving the positive effects and support for the visual system obtained through this form of nutrition. People that do not want to take a supplement can get similar carotenoids by eating kale, spinach, orange bell peppers, Gogi berries and wild Alaskan salmon.

More and more people are in front of digital screens playing video games for prolonged periods of time than ever before. This number continues to climb and therefore the number of cases of computer vision syndrome and digital eye strain also continues to climb. Dr Lange realized the enormous number of cognitive skills including memory and recall associated with video games. He came to the assumption that with all this increase in neurocognitive stimulation with video games maybe specific nutrients may support brain health and neurocognition. The Fortifeye Vitamin team researched a multitude of nutrients for brain health and continuously came back to one called Citicoline. Citicoline is a nutrient that has some impressive brain benefits with lots of good science and clinical studies in support of these benefits. Citicoline raises levels of important neurotransmitters in the brain, improves blood flow and energy while reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain. This nutrient is considered a nootropic that supports learning, memory and neuroprotection. Citicoline plays an important role in cell membrane integrity that acts as a “gate keeper” allowing passage of good nutrients and blocking unwanted substances from getting into the brain.

Dr Lange and the Fortifeye team picked Cognizin a proprietary form of citicoline backed by numerous good studies. Studies indicate Cognizin can improve attention and psychomotor speed, increase memory, increase attention and increase brain energy. This seemed to be the perfect nutrient to incorporate into a new evidence-based supplement for gamers.

Fortifeye Gamer Xtreme is a gamer vitamin developed by the Fortifeye team. This supplement will be available in the middle of December 2022. Fortifeye has taken a time-tested popular supplement called Fortifeye Focus and added Cognizin to it to produce this new gaming vitamin. This is a new generation in nutritional support for gamers. Gamers are at a much higher risk of developing CVS (computer vision syndrome) and do have more potential stress on their neurocognitive system too. Fortifeye Gamer Xtreme is the latest in nutritional support for the gamers and for anyone on a computer or digital screen for prolonged periods of time.

Fortifeye Omega Relief for pain and inflammation

Posted by Dr Michael Lange on May 22, 2022
Posted in: Uncategorized. Leave a comment

Dr Michael Lange has been involved in research and development of evidence-based supplements for the eyes and entire body for almost 30 years. His patient population is mainly geriatric with macular degeneration, dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, cataracts and many systemic health problems too. He has worked over the last 25 years on developing eye related supplements to bring nutritional support to the eye. in 2010 he started developing whole body supplements and a few years later sports nutrition supplements. Dr Lange started to realize something all of his elderly patients and most of his athletic patients had in common. What was this?? Pain and inflammation! Most of his geriatric population has to deal with either pain associated with osteo or rheumatoid arthritis. These patients have chronic and sometimes serious pain in their knees, hips, back, shoulders, hands, arms, feet and many other areas. Many young and old athletes also experience pain and inflammation quite frequently. Most of these people are taking OTC meds and prescribed pain meds that have many potential complications. Dr Lange started to put more and more hours into researching natural anti-inflammatory and pain relievers. Three nutrients he has been using for over 20 years fell into this category: omega 3 fish oil (Fortifeye Super Omega and Fortifeye Super Omega 3 Max), Astaxanthin in Fortifeye Focus and GLA in Fortifeye Black Currant Oil / GLA. Dr Lange has used these to help dry eye in patients naturally. The combination of all 3 of these is called Fortifeye Advanced Dry Eye Therapy and helps to decrease inflammation in specific areas in the eye improving dry eye signs and symptoms naturally. Many of his patients experience symptomatic relief of inflammation and associated pain with these supplements. Fortifeye Advanced Dry Eye Therapy is being recommended all over the world now by doctors to their patients with dry eye and also those on the computer for many hours of the day. The nutrients in this supplement help to reduce inflammation and pain associated with inflammation and also protects the eye form the damaging blue light associated with prolonged digital screen time.

Dr Lange has been very happy with the results he has been getting with his dry eye patients but still wanted something better for pain and inflammation. He started to research the powers of other natural ingredients like turmeric, curcumin, boswellia, ginger and many more. He became fascinated with curcumin and its natural powers. The problem with curcumin was it didn’t absorb well at all. The technology most supplement makers were using was either a synthetic or a derivative of black pepper to enhance the absorption properties. The problems is these have the potential to cause some problems if used for long periods of time. Dr Langes research led him to Dolcas-Biotech the company that makes the newest most exciting curcumin called Curcugen . Curcugen is the first Food-Matrix Oleoresin-Based Curcumin. Curcugen uses the important parts of the turmeric root to enhance the absorption dramatically. Polar resins, turmeric polysaccharides, turmeric essential oils and curcuminoids make up 100% of this turmeric active composition. This process enhances bioavailability by 52.5x of total curcuminoids over standardized curcumin 95%. The Fortifeye team did further testing and trials with both gummies and capsules for another six months. Dr Lange, Dr Hall and the Fortifeye Team tried many different variations of this new Curcugen at different strengths during this time and determined this would be the form of curcumin Fortifeye would use. The Fortifeye Team was impressed with the safety studies and the reduction in pain and inflammation studies done using Curcugen.

Fortifeye Next Gen Curcumin fueled by Curcugen was launched in May 2022 with a delicious Gummy and a vegan capsule.

https://fortifeye.com/product/fortifeye-next-gen-curcumin-fueled-by-curcugen/

In less than a two-week time period patients, customers and radio show listeners were giving testimonials of pain relief in very short periods of time. Dr Lange said this is the first supplement we have brought to market that acts so quickly and has had an enormous amount of positive feedback. The patients and customers that seemed to react the quickest were already taking either Fortifeye Super Omega or Fortifeye Super Omega Max. The right form and the right levels of omega 3 fish oil are very effective at lowering inflammation and reducing pain alone. Fortifeye Super Omega is a rTG from omega 3 fish oil that has a 3-4 time better absorption rate than the typical EE form omega 3 fish oil (ethyl ester form). Dr Lange says there is a definite positive synergy when u take the rTG omega 3 along with the Fortifeye Next Gen Curcumin. The omega 3 and Curcugen both act on inflammation differently and the combination of the two helps to support a healthier level of inflammation in the body. The Fortifeye Vitamins team decided to bundle both Fortifeye Super Omega and Fortifeye Next Gen Curcumin together at a discount and call it Fortifeye Omega Relief. Now for the first time you can get the health benefits of an rTG omega 3 fish oil along with the health benefits of Curcugen in Fortifeye Omega Relief.

https://fortifeye.com/product/omega-relief/

The Fortifeye team has enhanced the Fortifeye Omega Relief a little further with the addition of Black Currant Oil/ GLA and this is called Fortifeye Omega Relief Extreme. This supplement bundle uses Fortifeye Super Omega Max (50% more potent than Super Omega ) , Next Gen Curcumin and Fortifeye Black Currant oil/ GLA. This combination brings more rTG form omega 3 fish oil and GLA from Black Currant oil. The GLA enhances the anti inflammatory effects of series one prostaglandins (PGE1) and this sets this apart from the Fortifeye Omega Relief. Dr Lange states patients that are heavier and have more inflammation and associated pain may elect to try the Fortifeye Omega Extreme. Dr Hall and Dr Lange both agree these supplements will be great for athletes that are involved in heavy training to enhance their recovery and improve DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) and ROM ( range of motion).
